I've noticed that the lag effect that used to occur doesn't so much exist anymore. Alts are pretty closely tied to BTC at this point. There is a small lag as alts play catch up after confirming what BTC will continue to do, but outside of this, there is not much of a lag anymore. Though, I do think once BTC achieves a cycle top or mid-cycle top, alts will still have a few weeks before they top. The problem is that this is extremely hard to predict. So, we are left playing alts based largely upon what BTC does or will do.
